Google Gemini Spark AI Agent Launches on Mac, Adds Real-Time Tracking and Third-Party App Integrations
Google has released Gemini Spark for macOS, bringing its AI agent to desktop computers where it can access local files and compete directly with Claude Desktop and Microsoft Copilot. The beta release is available exclusively to Google AI Ultra subscribers in the United States.
File Access and Desktop Capabilities
Gemini Spark on Mac can sort and organize local files and use them as source material for Google Workspace documents. Google demonstrates this with invoices on a computer being converted into budgeting worksheets. The company says users will "soon" be able to assign multi-step tasks from their phones that trigger the desktop agent to pull information from Mac files, though this feature is not available at launch.
New App Integrations Address Key Gaps
Google has added integrations with Google Keep and Google Tasks, addressing criticism from early testers who found it impractical to use Google Docs for simple lists like vacation packing items. The update also connects Spark to third-party apps:
- Canva for design work
- Dropbox for file management
- Instacart for grocery ordering
- OpenTable for restaurant reservations
- Zillow Rentals for apartment tours
These integrations allow Spark to perform tasks like reserving tables, ordering weekly groceries, designing flyers, or scheduling apartment viewings.
Real-Time Topic Tracking
Gemini Spark now tracks topics and responds to events in real time, according to Google. This enables monitoring of sports scores, stock movements, breaking news, social media, blogs, online shopping, and weather updates. The feature aims to keep the agent's information current rather than relying solely on static training data.
Model Context Protocol Support
Google is rolling out support for custom Model Context Protocol (MCP), allowing users to connect additional apps directly into Spark. MCP, originally developed by Anthropic, provides a standardized way for AI assistants to integrate with external tools and data sources.
Availability and Competition
The macOS beta is limited to Google AI Ultra subscribers in the U.S. Pricing for AI Ultra has not been disclosed in this announcement. Gemini Spark initially launched last month on mobile and web platforms.
What This Means
Google is rapidly expanding Gemini Spark's capabilities to match competing desktop AI agents. The addition of Keep and Tasks integration shows Google responding quickly to user feedback, while real-time tracking and third-party app support move Spark closer to being a true autonomous agent. The MCP support is particularly significant, as it aligns Google with the emerging standard for AI tool integration rather than forcing users into a proprietary ecosystem. However, the U.S.-only, subscription-only launch suggests Google is still testing before a wider rollout.
