Google makes Gemini's personalized image generation free for all U.S. users
Google removed the paywall for Gemini's personalized image generation feature, making it free for all eligible U.S. users starting today. The Nano Banana-powered feature was previously limited to Plus, Pro, and Ultra subscribers.
Google Removes Paywall for Personalized Image Generation
Google announced that Gemini's personalized image generation feature is now available for free to all eligible users in the United States, removing the paywall that previously restricted access to Plus, Pro, and Ultra subscribers.
The feature, powered by what Google calls "Nano Banana," was first announced in April 2024 as part of Gemini's Personal Intelligence capabilities. It generates images based on user preferences and interests drawn from connected Google services without requiring detailed prompts.
How the Feature Works
Gemini accesses data from Gmail, Google Photos, YouTube, and Search to understand user preferences. According to Google, users can now request "Create an illustration of me and my favorite things" instead of specifying "Create an illustration of me and my favorite things, such as coffee and baking."
The system can pull actual photos of users from Google Photos, eliminating the need for manual uploads. Personal Intelligence remains an opt-in feature, allowing users to control which apps Gemini can access through a toggle in the Tools menu.
Current Availability
Google initially rolled out Personal Intelligence to all U.S. users in March 2025 and recently expanded to India and Japan. The personalized image generation component was the last feature restricted to paid tiers.
The Gemini app reached 750 million monthly active users earlier this year, according to Google.
What This Means
Google's decision to make personalized image generation free suggests either strong confidence in the feature's ability to drive engagement or a strategic shift to compete with free AI image generation offerings from competitors. By lowering barriers to entry for personalized AI features, Google positions Gemini as a more accessible alternative to paid AI services, though this may pressure premium subscription value propositions across the industry. The move also raises questions about data usage and privacy as more users opt into cross-app data sharing for AI personalization.
