Google integrates Gemini AI into Play Store for conversational app discovery and in-app purchases
Google has begun rolling out Gemini integration with the Google Play Store on Android, first previewed at I/O 2026. The feature enables users to find and install applications through natural language queries to the Gemini app.
Users can submit prompts like "What are some meditation apps" or "Recommend a good map app for my phone to download while I'm traveling internationally." According to Google, some queries return Play Store cards displaying apps with ratings, download counts, and direct install links. Other prompts generate traditional Gemini responses describing multiple options, after which users can request installation with commands like "Install [app name]" or "Download [game name]."
In-app purchase support
The integration extends beyond app discovery. Google claims Gemini can now search for and purchase in-app digital items, subscriptions, and digital gift cards—building on gift card support introduced last year. Example commands include "Purchase [in-app item] for [game name]" or "Buy [store name] gift card."
Google states Gemini can only recommend in-app items for apps already installed on the device. The company notes that "not all apps support making purchases with the Google Play connected app in Gemini, but the list is actively growing."
Setup and availability
Users must manually enable the Play Store connection by entering a relevant prompt in Gemini, which then guides them through the setup process. The feature was still rolling out as of June 26, 2026, and had not appeared on all devices checked by 9to5Google.
What this means
This marks Google's first major integration of Gemini with core Android services for practical utility beyond general assistant tasks. The move positions Gemini as a discovery layer over the Play Store's existing catalog, potentially changing how users find apps by shifting from keyword search to intent-based conversation. Success depends on recommendation quality and how many developers opt into the in-app purchase feature—a metric Google has not disclosed.
