Claude adds memory import tool to help users switch from ChatGPT and other AI services
Anthropic has launched a memory import feature for Claude that lets users transfer their stored preferences, personal details, and conversation context from other AI services like ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and Microsoft Copilot. The tool generates copy-paste instructions that extract all memories from a competing service and import them into Claude, eliminating the need to rebuild your AI profile from scratch.
Claude Adds Memory Import Tool for Seamless Migration from ChatGPT
Anthropichas launched a new memory import feature for Claude that lets users transfer their AI memories and preferences from competing services including ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and Microsoft Copilot in a single operation.
How the Tool Works
The process uses generated copy-paste instructions that users execute in sequence. Users access the memory import via Claude's Settings > Privacy > Memory preferences, where the system generates specific instructions. These are then pasted into the competing AI service's prompt, which outputs all stored memories in a structured format—including personal details, communication style preferences, tools and languages used, and project context.
Users can review the exported data in a text editor, remove unwanted entries, and then paste the finalized memory list back into Claude, which imports everything in formatted blocks.
Strategic Timing
The feature arrives as Claude's iOS app has reached the top spot in Apple's App Store free apps category. Simultaneously, ChatGPT faces pressure from a coordinated "QuitGPT" campaign encouraging users to switch platforms. Anthropic's move directly targets users considering migration, removing a significant friction point in switching AI assistants.
Users can activate memory import whether they're new to Claude or existing users looking to augment their AI profile with additional context. The tool works for both free and paid Claude accounts.
Memory Management Controls
Claude users retain full control over imported memories. The Privacy settings page lets users delete specific memories or disable "Generate memory from chat history" entirely. Users can also prompt Claude directly to remove all stored information about themselves.
What This Means
This move signals Anthropic's confidence in Claude's feature set and willingness to directly compete for market share by reducing switching costs. The manual copy-paste workflow—while functional—appears designed to be transparent and user-controllable rather than automated. For ChatGPT users considering migration, this eliminates the primary barrier: rebuilding months of accumulated context and preferences. However, the feature's effectiveness depends on competing services honoring the export request, which is not guaranteed.
