Anthropic has launched the Claude for Google Workspace add-on in public beta, giving paid Claude users a sidebar assistant inside Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides. The add-on is available starting October 6, 2026, through the Google Workspace Marketplace, according to 9to5Google's report.

What the add-on does

The sidebar opens alongside a file and can help build documents and make edits. Per Anthropic, as relayed by 9to5Google, capabilities vary by app:

  • Google Docs: Fix spelling, rewrite portions of a document, or restyle sections without breaking existing formatting.
  • Google Sheets: Write formulas and build tables using the document's context. Users can also upload additional documents or spreadsheets to build something new in Sheets.
  • Google Slides: Build new slides using existing layouts or themes, and flag elements that may need updating.

An "ask before edits" mode lets users preview changes before Claude applies them.

New connectors for Docs, Sheets, and Slides

Anthropic also added Claude connectors for the three apps. These let users edit Google Workspace files directly from Claude by pasting a file link into a conversation, without opening the file in Google's editor.

Availability and pricing

  • Status: Public beta, starting October 6, 2026
  • Access: All paid Claude users
  • Distribution: Google Workspace Marketplace
  • Pricing: No separate fee for the add-on has been disclosed; access is tied to paid Claude plans
  • Underlying model: Not specified in the source material
  • Context window and benchmarks: Not applicable or not disclosed

Context

Google already offers its own Gemini assistant natively across Workspace apps, and 9to5Google notes that Gemini can handle much of the same work. The add-on is aimed at users who already rely on Claude and want it inside Google's ecosystem.

The launch follows another recent Claude capability reported by 9to5Google: sending emails in Gmail without per-message approval. The same outlet also reported the launches of Claude Opus 5.5 and OpenAI's GPT-6 Sol and Luna on the same day; this article does not cover those releases.

What this means

This is a distribution move, not a model release. Anthropic is meeting users inside the tools where documents are created rather than requiring them to copy content between Claude and Google's editors. The sidebar puts Claude in direct competition with Gemini in Google's own product surface, and the link-paste connectors offer a second path for users who prefer to stay in Claude.

The "ask before edits" preview mode addresses a core adoption barrier for AI-driven document editing: trust in changes made to shared files. Its default behavior and whether it can be turned off were not detailed in the source.

Open questions remain. Anthropic has not disclosed, in the material available, which Claude model powers the sidebar, whether usage counts against plan limits differently, or when the add-on will leave beta. Enterprise administrators will likely want details on data handling and Workspace admin controls before rolling it out.

Developers anywhere can enable it on select API models starting today, but it is off by default. OpenAI's own tests show detection falling from about 92% to 66% after 10% of words are replaced with synonyms.
