ChatGPT Pro Users Can Now Connect Bank Accounts for Personalized Financial Advice

OpenAI today launched a preview of personal finance features in ChatGPT that allow Pro subscribers in the US to connect their financial accounts through Plaid. The integration provides access to more than 12,000 financial institutions including major banks like Citi and Chase, plus services like Affirm and Robinhood.

According to OpenAI, over 200 million users already use ChatGPT monthly for financial guidance. The new feature moves the chatbot beyond generic advice by analyzing actual account data to generate personalized recommendations.

How It Works

Users access the feature through a "Finances" section in ChatGPT's sidebar or by prompting "@Finances, connect my accounts." ChatGPT guides users through Plaid's authentication process, then builds a visual dashboard showing their financial overview. Dashboard generation takes several minutes according to OpenAI's documentation.

ChatGPT can read balances, transactions, investments, and liabilities through Plaid. The system cannot view full account numbers or execute transactions. Users can disconnect accounts at any time and delete any financial memories ChatGPT stores. These memories remain inaccessible when using ChatGPT's temporary chats feature.

Data Privacy Controls

OpenAI applies existing data control settings to the finance feature. Users who have opted out of model training will have those preferences honored for financial prompts and information. An OpenAI spokesperson confirmed the feature was developed before the company's recent acquisition of fintech startup Hiro, which offered an AI-powered financial planning tool.

Rollout Plans

The feature launches today as a US-only preview for Pro users. OpenAI said it plans to expand to Plus subscribers and additional markets after gathering real-world usage data. "We're starting with a preview to a smaller group so we can learn from real-world use, improve the experience, and expand thoughtfully," the company stated.

What This Means

This marks OpenAI's first major product feature requiring sensitive third-party data integration. The Plaid partnership provides technical infrastructure but raises questions about liability and data security in AI applications. OpenAI's read-only, no-transaction approach suggests a cautious initial implementation. Success of this preview will likely determine how aggressively OpenAI pursues financial services integrations and whether competitors like Anthropic or Google follow with similar features.
