ChatGPT Paid Users Can Now Edit Google Drive Files Without Leaving the Chat
OpenAI has expanded ChatGPT's Google Drive integration, allowing paid subscribers to add Drive files to their ChatGPT Library and edit them directly inside the chat interface. The edits apply to the actual file in Drive, not a copied version.
OpenAI is rolling out an expanded Google Drive integration for ChatGPT, letting paid subscribers open and edit Google Drive files directly inside the chat without switching to another window or app.
The update was announced by ChatGPT Consumer Product Lead Adam Fry on X on August 14, 2026, as part of a weekly feature drop. According to Fry, users on paid ChatGPT plans can now add Google Drive files to their ChatGPT Library by tapping the "+" button on the left side of the prompt field and selecting "Add from Library."
Once a file is added, users can ask ChatGPT questions about it, and — new with this update — open and edit the file directly within the chat interface. Fry confirmed that edits made through ChatGPT modify the actual file stored in Google Drive, rather than creating a static copy. ChatGPT still gives users the option to open a file in its native Google app, such as Docs or Sheets, if they prefer to work there instead.
The Drive integration was one of four features Fry highlighted in this week's update. The others include:
- Quizzes: Typing a prompt like "Quiz me on [topic]" now automatically generates an interactive quiz inside the chat, complete with multiple-choice questions, navigation between questions, and a hint button.
- Reservation search: Users can ask ChatGPT to find restaurant reservations using natural-language criteria, such as requesting a table for two with outdoor seating on a specific date.
- Home page suggestions: Paid subscribers now see "high-quality suggestions" surfaced on ChatGPT's home page.
The reservation feature builds on OpenAI's previously announced Yelp integration, which lets users book tables and join restaurant waitlists directly through ChatGPT.
OpenAI has not disclosed which paid tiers (Plus, Pro, Team, Enterprise) receive the Drive editing capability, nor has it specified a broader rollout timeline beyond the initial announcement. No pricing changes accompany this update, and no details were given on file size limits, supported file types beyond Docs and Sheets, or how conflicts are handled if a file is edited simultaneously in Drive and ChatGPT.

This is a workflow feature, not a new model or architecture change — it extends ChatGPT's existing Library and Google Drive connector rather than introducing new AI capability.
