Anthropic has extended access to Claude Fable 5 on all paid plans through July 19, 2026, according to a company announcement. Users can allocate up to 50% of their weekly usage limits to Fable 5, with Claude Code maintaining rate limits 50% higher than standard.
Extension follows GPT-5.6 Sol release
The extension comes after OpenAI's release of GPT-5.6 Sol, which falls into the same Fable/Mythos model class as Claude Fable 5. Unlike Anthropic, OpenAI has not announced plans to restrict access to GPT-5.6 Sol for subscribers.
According to Anthropic's announcement: "After that, you can continue using Fable 5 with usage credits, or switch to another model to keep working within your remaining limits."
Compute constraints drive access limitations
Anthropic originally implemented the temporary availability structure due to compute constraints. The company stated it needed better visibility into demand and compute availability before committing to permanent unrestricted access for subscribers.
This marks another in a series of extensions for Fable 5 access. The pattern of repeated extensions has created uncertainty around long-term availability.
Competitive pressure from OpenAI
OpenAI's unrestricted access to GPT-5.6 Sol creates a competitive advantage in user acquisition. Simon Willison, who reported the extension, notes: "OpenAI are winning users simply due to the uncertainty that surrounds Fable access."
Willison suggests Anthropic should "change track and keep Fable permanently available on those plans" to address the competitive disadvantage.
