Anthropic launches internal drug discovery program for neglected diseases alongside Claude Science product
Anthropic is starting an internal drug discovery program focused on neglected diseases while launching Claude Science, a product designed for pharmaceutical companies. Life sciences head Eric Kauderer-Abrams said the program aims to provide feedback for developing better AI tools for drugmakers.
Anthropic launches internal drug discovery program for neglected diseases alongside Claude Science product
Anthropic announced an internal drug discovery program targeting neglected diseases at a San Francisco event on Tuesday, while debuting Claude Science, a new AI product designed for pharmaceutical companies.
Life sciences head Eric Kauderer-Abrams said the company will focus on discovering treatments for diseases that traditional biopharmaceutical companies wouldn't consider commercially attractive. "We're doing this because we believe first and foremost that to build the right models, products and tools to accelerate the industry, we need to live it along with all of you," Kauderer-Abrams said.
The company did not disclose what it would do with promising drug candidates. Traditional pharmaceutical companies would typically advance such candidates into clinical trials.
Anthropic positioned the internal program as a way to generate feedback loops for improving its AI tools for life sciences customers. "We believe in the power of tight feedback loops, and there's no substitute for having our own experiences alongside you all in the trenches trying to develop drugs," Kauderer-Abrams said.
Jonah Cool, Anthropic's head of life sciences partnerships, said the company's goal is to focus on neglected diseases while creating and selling AI tools for life sciences companies.
Tech companies push into healthcare
The move follows similar efforts by other tech giants to enter the healthcare market, with mixed results to date. Alphabet and Apple have pursued various healthcare initiatives, while Amazon built a healthcare business through acquisitions of One Medical and PillPack, now part of Amazon Health Services.
Anthropic did not disclose pricing for Claude Science, specific capabilities beyond general drug discovery applications, or details about which neglected diseases it will target.
What this means
Anthropic is taking a different approach than competitors by running its own drug discovery program alongside selling AI tools to pharmaceutical companies. This strategy could provide valuable real-world data to improve its models, but also raises questions about potential conflicts of interest with pharmaceutical customers and whether Anthropic has the expertise to navigate drug development's complex regulatory requirements. The focus on neglected diseases may help avoid direct competition with customers while addressing genuine medical needs.
