Anthropic Doubles Claude Code Rate Limits, Secures 300+ MW Compute from SpaceX's Colossus 1
Anthropic has secured access to all compute capacity at SpaceX's Colossus 1 data center, adding more than 300 megawatts of new capacity within the month. As a result, the company is doubling five-hour rate limits for paid Claude Code users and removing peak hour restrictions for Pro and Max tiers.
The deal enables immediate rate limit increases for Claude Code users across all paid tiers.
Rate Limit Changes
Anthropic is implementing the following changes for paid Claude Code users (Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise plans):
- Doubling five-hour rate limits for Claude Code across all paid tiers
- Removing peak hour restrictions for Pro and Max users
- Increasing API rate limits "considerably" for Claude Opus models
The changes take effect immediately for existing subscribers.
Compute Infrastructure Expansion
The agreement grants Anthropic access to SpaceX's Colossus 1 data center, which xAI (now owned by SpaceX) operates. According to the companies, this adds more than 300 megawatts of new compute capacity to Anthropic's infrastructure within the month.
Anthropic has also "expressed interest in partnering with SpaceX to develop multiple gigawatts of orbital AI compute capacity," according to a joint statement. SpaceX recently filed paperwork with the FCC indicating plans to launch one million satellites to create an orbital data center.
The SpaceX deal follows recent infrastructure agreements Anthropic struck with Amazon and Google, though specific details of those arrangements were not disclosed.
Background on the Partnership
The partnership marks a notable shift in Elon Musk's public stance toward Anthropic. Musk recently called Anthropic "misanthropic and evil" and has been critical of CEO Dario Amodei. However, in a post on X, Musk said he spent time with senior Anthropic team members and was "impressed," adding that Claude will "probably" be good.
Musk added a caveat: "We reserve the right to reclaim the compute if their AI engages in actions that harm humanity."
What This Means
The 300+ MW capacity addition represents a significant infrastructure expansion for Anthropic, enabling the company to ease rate limits that have been a common complaint among Claude Code users. The removal of peak hour restrictions for Pro and Max tiers addresses one of the most cited friction points in competitive comparisons with other AI coding assistants.
The orbital compute initiative, while still in the interest phase, signals both companies' long-term infrastructure ambitions. However, the FCC filing for one million satellites faces substantial regulatory and technical hurdles before becoming operational.
